INTERVIEW - Isabel Gomez
An eyewear buyer for American Apparel, as well as a part time model & artist, Isabel is my source for fashion inspiration.
She’s also the person that I went pescetarian with. Although it only lasted two weeks for her, it was fun cooking lunch together between classes and trying to supress our cravings for hamburgers.
I don’t know very much about authentic Mexican dishes. How was it growing up in a Mexican family? What did you eat?
Growing up in a Mexican family was awesome! My mother would cook all kinds of meals. She was the head of the household when my grandmother died so she always cooked.
Just to name a few Chile verde, home made tortillas, rice, carne asada, beans (my favorite), a caldo (sort of like a mexican stew).
Mexican food is my favorite! I just made papas tacos the other night. What’s the best part about Mexican food?
Spices. Potato tacos are bomb haha
Its always said in the mexican tradition that if your salsa is super spicy you must have been angry when you made it. Its an emotional meal I suppose
How does your mom cook? I know from reading old cookbooks that a long time ago they didn’t measure things and just cooked with what they had. Is she a traditional cook to this day?
Yup. I swear to god that we never had measuring cups in my house and to be honest I do the same thing. My mother is very traditional when she cooks.
I do it too, I find it a lot easier. But it makes it hard when writing a cookbook because people want to know how much to put in haha. Do you have any stories or fond memories about cooking when you were little?
When she used to teach me she would just guess and then tell me to add more if I feel like it needs more. Yeah, my mother taught me how to properly roll a tortilla into a perfect circle. Very fun. I would sit and watch and ask questions, she was a master in the kitchen.
I’d like to learn that for sure.
It’s hard, I would always mess up. Haha
What do you want to learn to make? Something that would be beneficial to learn?
Yeah I would love to learn how to make… Fijoles rancheros. My aunt makes them all the time and they are soooo good!! But I would love to learn all the recipes my mother has stored in her brain. I could carry the tradition
Do you know any vegetarians / vegans that have impacted your life?
You. Haha
The day you said ‘I’m going to be vegan’ was the day you did and never looked back.
Does it inspire you in any way? Does anything interest you about veganism, even if it was part time?
I would never consider vegan food and you’re pretty determined and you teach me the affect certain food can have on the body. Yeah to be honest I would be vegan.
Not now but I would consider it, I was a vegetarian for a bit and a pescetarian. I think at this time I am not as committed to it as I once was, but I will someday.
So what scares you off about veganism? What’s preventing you from making that extra step?
Being vegan doesn’t scare me I’m just not ready to swear off meat just yet.
What is the one ingredient that makes everything right in the world? Why?
Pepper. haha I don’t know, it makes everything amazing, it gives it a kick. There is a such thing as too much, but a dash is nice.
If you could only eat one food the rest of your life, what would it be?
I always said rice but then there came a time where I was poor and had to eat it all the time and I was sick of it so now I say beans, I can do so much with them and they give great vitamins to my body!
Where can we find you online?
Facebook, Tumblr, and My Blog.
